Ahh, you're in my hometown, talking about my Alma mater. And I'm now settled in Portland Oregon, my daughter attending U of O and searching for her apartment (now $600) in Eugene.

Visiting NY for a week each year is good, too, and a lot cheaper...

Demetri,

What we found is that a library is massively shaped by the philosophy and objectives of the lead librarians. This is pretty amazing, and in someways I was envious. We who do a lot of tech have our objectives spread all over the campus. A library can be a place fully shaped by an individuals judgment and objectives.

Having said that, librarians are often 2-3 people working with 100-200 students in a space typically six times or more larger than a classroom. They need to have the space help achieve their goals. It's not impossible for them to work one-on-one with students as you describe, but it not as likely as in a classroom with a 18 to 1 student to teacher ratio.

Thus, I think the design of libraries is both an art and a science. We want students to be increasingly independent in their research ability. That may involve some interactions like you describe, but not a constant experience.

Thanks for the comment!

thanks for posting this Jim. I like the idea of flexible working spaces supporting both quiet individual study and noisy collaborative study. How about the role of the librarian(s) in these spaces, both for working with students and teachers. Seems like we need to build in flexibility and opportunity, and support self-help systems. The collaboration of librarians, library support staff, tech integrationists, and other adults mentoring students in these spaces is important.
