The Dichotomy

Two weeks into school, and things are beginning to calm. I’ve been thinking about the dichotomy.

In a broad sense, technology should enable students to have more individualized learning experiences. More content that they choose. More avenues of research and production. More chances for self-paced learning. Perhaps even expert learning. Creativity. Discovery. Confidence.

At the same time, technology enables more collaboration and sharing. More group work. More debates, and contact with authorities and peers. More publication options, and more opportunities to use shared pools of knowledge and material.

It’s strange that technology can do both. In some ways, both are more respectful of the individual, even when collaborating with others, because the ties between each are more visible and documented.
